Foxboro FBM Series I/O Module Manual
Foxboro (now part of Schneider) FBM series I/O module manual, is a core component of industrial automation control systems (such as DCS distributed control systems), responsible for collecting on-site signals (temperature, pressure, switch values) and outputting control instructions. It can be classified and disassembled as follows:

1、 Family positioning: the "nerve endings" of industrial control
FBM (Fieldbus Module) is a distributed I/O module of Foxboro I/A Series DCS, which is distributed on the factory site like "nerve endings". It connects sensors (thermocouples, transmitters), actuators (valves, motors), converts physical signals (4-20mA, switch values) into digital signals, and transmits them to the control system "brain" (such as Modicon Quantum PLC). It is adapted to:
-Process industries (petrochemical, power, metallurgy): temperature acquisition of reaction towers in refineries, control of turbine valves in power plants;
-Discrete manufacturing (automotive, pharmaceutical): humidity control in painting workshop, pressure regulation in sterile workshop;
-Municipal engineering (water treatment, environmental protection): pH value collection in sewage treatment plants, oxygen control in garbage incinerators.

2、 Model rule: The suffix hides the "function password"
FBM models are divided into * * digital quantity (DI/DO), analog quantity (AI/AO), and composite type * *, with suffix numbers/letter combinations corresponding to * * signal type, channel number, explosion-proof/environmental adaptation * *:
|Model format | Core differences | Typical scenarios|
|----------------|---------------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
|FBM01 | Basic Digital Input (DI) | Factory Production Line (Conveyor Start Stop Signal Acquisition)|
|FBM01/43 | Customized type (43 DI+specific protocol adaptation) | Intelligent warehousing (AGV status feedback)|
|FBM04/39/44 | Composite type (39 DI+44 DO) | Automotive assembly line (multi-sensor+actuator control)|
|FBM05 | Basic Analog Input (AI) | Petrochemical (Pipeline Pressure 4-20mA Acquisition)|
|FBM07a/12A | Explosion proof type (` a `/` A `=ATEX certification) | Refinery (temperature collection in hazardous areas)|
|FBM09/14A | High speed analog quantity (14 bit accuracy+kHz level sampling) | Wind power (high-frequency acquisition of blade vibration)|

3、 Value: Irreplaceability of 'nerve endings'
-Production line compliance "essential": Hazardous areas (explosion-proof areas) in process industries (such as petrochemicals) must use FBM (ATEX certified) with the suffix 'a'. Ordinary I/O modules will explode upon entering, and FBM modules are used in 80% of hazardous areas in refineries worldwide.
-* * System compatibility with "moat" * *: The Foxboro DCS system is highly enclosed, and the FBM module is deeply bound to the control system's "brain" (hardware encryption+protocol private). Changing to a third-party module will result in an error, and the enterprise can only renew the purchase.
-The DCS system of an old factory (such as a petrochemical plant built in the 1980s) is a "customized black box" software that only FBM can be compatible with. Replacing modules means restructuring the entire system (at a cost of over 100 million yuan)
Simply put, the FBM series is the "nerve endings" of industrial automation, still silently working in the global process industry, belonging to the existence of "inconspicuous but explosive when stopped".
